There are so many different type of restaurants in Surry Hills. To celebrate this holiday season, me and my dear friend picked this place for an afterwork catch up.
There are couple of reason why we picked this bar: it is close to Centre, it is kind of famous and also it is a bar with Japanese/Chinese fusion. Yup, we are curious about how food would be look like.
Base on its website, it informed on the booking page that any book for 2 people might be sit at bar area. In fact it was a very fun experience to sit at the bar.
Some background information from its own website:
“Bar H Dining was opened in October 2010 by Chef Hamish Ingham and wife Sommelier Rebecca Lines. As the name suggests Bar H Dining is a wine bar style eatery, fun and vibrant with a relaxed feel about it. “
It does has a lot of wine collection by just looking at it.
The food menu is short but with a lot of interesting stuff:
the tasting menu is not that expensive, 6 course for $68.
We ordered following A La Carte items:
Entree:
Oysters, wasabi, yuzu
In my opinion, this oyster is not fresh enough. The sauce is very strong and covered the oyster’s original flavour. We saw how the kitchen made it. The oyster is pre opened and saved in the fridge, maybe thats the reason why.
Two mains:
Charred duck breast
Absolutely my dish. My Friend thought the skin was not crispy enough. But I loved it .its cooked to the right tenderness and also seasoned well. Also it cut to the bit size which perfectly for matching drinks. remember it is a bar :P.
Wagyu rump cap, miso, kale, beetroot
This dish is Char grilled as well. We saw the big cut of wagyu beef sit on the char griller in the kitchen and we all got excited about this dish. The miso sauce was amazing and prefect pair with the good quality of wagyu beef.
side:
Roasted heirloom carrots
Well it is just a carrot but it was very tasty.
Dessert:
Honeydew Melon, sake granita, passionfruit ice cream, saffron
Stupid me that I didn’t actually saw the Sake granita until I tasted it. The dish is very nicely presented and very balanced on its sweetness. The passionfruit ice cream has its tanginess, with the honeycomb which were prefect pair.
In summary, although this is a bar style place, but it has some very good quality dishes. portion is pretty decent and good for sharing (and it is designed for sharing actually).
Finally, one things really annoys me is the 2% card surcharge. Also on our receipt it charged 1 dollar donation to the OzHavest which the staff didn’t even asked.
